Zoubek Olbram

Olbram Zoubek was born on 21 April 1926 in Prague. Between 1945 and 1952, he studied at the VSUP (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design) in Prague in the studio of Josef Wagner. From 1959, Zoubek was a member of group TRASA; in 1987, a founding member of the NOVA SKUPINA (New Group). From 1952, Zoubek lived with his first wife Eva Kmentova, a distinguished Czech sculptress. At present he lives with his second wife Marie in Prague and Litomysl. His son Jasan Zoubek has been noted as a newly emerging personality in the world of young Czech sculpture.
His experiences from a trip to Greece in 1958, affected Zoubek forever with regard to the classic notion of the noble mission of art, the idealism of humanity and the constant repetition of fatalism. From the beginning Zoubek, however, had formed his idea of visual art from his knowledge of works by modern sculptors.
His encounter of Albert Giacometti’s works in Paris confirmed Zoubek’s opinion that his approach was correct. Zoubek has established a personal style of integral figuratism. He expressed its meaning laconically: ”I create people of whom I think.”
In 1969, Zoubek showed a group of statues among pedestrians on the town square as a part of “Socha a mesto” (Statue and City) exhibition.
For a long time, during the Communist totalitarian regime, Zoubek worked as a restorer on a chateau in Litomysl.
His work is not only prodigious, but its scope is massive, spanning from small, free and embossed statues to monumental sculptures. Zoubek enjoys working with architects. He is the author of many interior and exterior creations – among others there are the examples of the famous Jan Palach bust and the tomb of the Havel family. Zoubek’s favourite materials are asbestos cement, lead and tin, to achieve an impression of emphasis he uses polychrome and gold plating.
Zoubek has had dozens of exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, to name but a few: in Krakow, Vienna, Essen, Kiel, and Frankfurt upon Main, Berlin and Paris.
